Queima das Fitas 2026 — University Week Across Portugal

#university#festival#music#coimbra

Every May, the university cities of Portugal — Coimbra, Porto, Lisbon, and others — host their Queima das Fitas (burning of the ribbons), a week-long celebration marking the end of the academic year.

The Coimbra Queima is the oldest and most iconic — a five-night festival culminating in the Queima itself, where the faculty ribbons are ceremonially burned. Headliners have included artists like The Script, Milky Chance, and others in recent years.

Porto's Queima starts in mid-May with concerts every night across the city, culminating the last week of May. The main stage is in the Bolhão area.

Lisbon's typically runs in early May across multiple venues in the city centre.

For 2026, the Évora Queima runs April 25–30 (listed on Voxma) with a strong programme of Portuguese pop and rock. Coimbra dates TBC — check the Voxma calendar for updates.

These events are free or very cheap (from €12 per night) and attract huge local crowds. They're very much for students and young people, but visitors are welcome.
